Can You Drive a Rental UTV Straight to Bulldog Canyon?

Pickup is the shop, not a trail

All rentals are pickup only at 724 E Scenic St, Apache Junction. That is the only address.

Arrive one hour before your start time. That hour covers the walk-through and helmets. It is not deducted from your block. The UTV briefing runs 15 to 20 minutes: controls, terrain, trail recommendations.

You must be 25 or older to rent a UTV. The Can-Am Maverick X3 is four seats, 135 HP, with four helmets and goggles. An iPad with trail maps goes with the machine.

The clock is pickup-to-return, lot to lot. Four-hour UTV rentals start at 8:00 AM or 2:00 PM. For Sunday closure, arrive-early, and when a block has to be back, use the pickup hours post and whether rental time includes travel. The trail drive is not a lake tow.

You drive the Can-Am

The lot sits about five minutes from the Bulldog Canyon OHV area. Riders drive the Can-Am straight from the lot. No trailer is required for that ride.

The machine is street-legal and registered in Arizona, so it can be ridden on roads where OHVs are permitted. Shop copy says Arizona law requires all UTV occupants to wear helmets on public roads. The shop includes DOT helmets.

A trailer is an add-on, from $80/day, if you are going farther. You need a tow vehicle with a 2-inch hitch receiver and a minimum 5,000-lb tow rating. Most riders do not need a trailer for Bulldog Canyon.

Do not treat any one gate as the shop trailhead. Tonto National Forest lists five access points for the Bulldog Canyon OHV Permit Zone: Blue Point, Usery, Wolverine, Hackamore, and Dutchman. The Forest Service does not use lock combinations.

Dutchman OHV Staging Area is the published main access from SR-88 (Apache Trail). The gate stays open. It closes only for emergency (flood, fire). Day-use only. No camping within 1 mile of the entrance. No fee to park at the staging area. The forest permit is required once you enter the Permit Zone. No potable water. Portable restrooms.

Usery is off Usery Pass (Ellsworth Rd). Capacity is 10–15 vehicles with trailers or 20–30 cars. The gate is closed but unlocked. Keep it closed for horses. Day-use. No camping within 1 mile. No potable water. Portable restrooms. Parking in the staging area does not need the OHV permit.

Blue Point is off Bush Highway. Capacity is 5–10 vehicles with trailers or 10–20 cars. The gate is closed but unlocked. Close it for horses. Day-use. No camping within 2 miles of the entrance, which is stricter than the other two. No potable water.

The zone is about 34,000 acres with about 20 miles of open routes. Routes are full-size vehicle width. Stay on designated routes. Driving off-road is prohibited.

The permit is not a Tonto Pass

A Tonto Daily Pass plus watercraft sticker is for lake parking and launch at Saguaro and Canyon. It is not the Bulldog Canyon OHV permit.

Tonto National Forest requires an OHV Special Recreation Permit in Bulldog Canyon, The Rolls, St. Clair, and Desert Vista (Lower Sycamore TBD). One permit covers all four zones. A Tonto Pass, a Discovery Pass, and an Interagency / America the Beautiful pass are not accepted in OHV Permit Zones.

Buy the forest permit only on Recreation.gov or the Recreation.gov app. Search “Tonto National Forest OHV Permit.” It is not sold at District Offices. Do not go to Mesa Ranger Station, 5140 E Ingram St, Mesa, AZ 85205, (480) 610-3300, for this permit. That office sells lake passes, Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., closed noon–12:30, and it does not sell passes after 4 p.m. It is closed Saturday, Sunday, and federal holidays.

The permit system in those zones began January 1, 2025.

Every motorized vehicle — ATV, UTV/SxS, dirtbike, Jeep, SUV, full-size — must have at least one rider with a permit issued in their name as on their driver’s license. Youth under 16 operating an OHV do not need their own permit. They must be accompanied by a guardian who has one.

Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable. One permit covers any one vehicle the holder is in that day. Keep a digital or printed copy you can show law enforcement. The Recreation.gov app can display the permit without cell service. Scan & Pay QR codes at most access points and all staging areas sell the 3-day permit only.

Wave & Ridge includes the Bulldog Canyon permit with the rental. Do not buy a Tonto Daily hangtag for this ride. Do not pay a second time at a Scan & Pay QR.

The Arizona State OHV Decal is a separate state requirement. It does not replace the forest OHV permit. On a rental, that decal is a vehicle-registration item on the machine, not a hangtag you buy at checkout. State OHV rules live at AZGFD.

Helmets and forest rules

The shop includes DOT helmets and goggles for four.

Arizona statute A.R.S. § 28-1179(B): a person under 18 may not operate or ride an OHV on public or state land unless wearing a properly fitted, fastened helmet designed for motorized vehicle use with a minimum DOT safety rating. The statute carves an exception if the child is in a child restraint and the OHV has a rollover protection system.

U.S. Forest Service OHV Permit Zone rules: a DOT-approved, properly fitted helmet is required for operators and passengers under 18, and strongly recommended for 18 and older. Stay on designated trails. All cross-country travel is prohibited. USDA-approved spark arrestor. Muffler preventing sound above 96 dB. Adequate brakes. Headlights and taillights if you operate from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise.

Horizontal forest-road markers mean street-legal plus a valid driver’s license. Vertical markers mean an RV or MC plate and OHV decal; a driver license is not required on those roads, and under 16 may operate there if they follow the vehicle’s age recommendation.

No developed campgrounds in the permit zones. Pack it in, pack it out. In Bulldog Canyon, camping is prohibited for the first mile from each access gate, except Blue Point: the first two miles, including 300 feet either side of the road or trail. Camping is not allowed in staging areas.

Cancel free if 48 or more hours before start. No refund inside 48 hours. If a storm is forecast before launch, the move is a reschedule, not a refund.

Canyon Lake public ramps and access points close September 8, 2026, ahead of the SRP/Reclamation drawdown starting September 16, 2026, about 16 weeks and about 54 feet. Saguaro is a different reservoir. A UTV day does not use a boat ramp. It still starts at the shop. Canyon Lake closure dates.
