Four Peaks Mountain Terrain With High Elevation Utv Trail And Panoramic Arizona Views
Experienced Riders

Four Peaks Area

Mountain terrain with steep grades, loose rock, and trail conditions that change with the weather. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Phoenix metro. Not a beginner route, but the views are worth the effort.

I have been riding UTVs in this part of Arizona for over fifteen years. I have spent time behind the wheel of RZRs, Talon 1000Rs, older Can-Am Commanders, and plenty of other machines through friends and riding partners. When I started Wave and Ridge and had to pick one machine to put customers in, I chose the Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo. In my experience, nothing else comes close.

Why I Run the X3 and Nothing Else

The reason is simple: the X3 handles the terrain out here better than anything else I have driven. The trails around Bulldog Canyon and the Tonto National Forest are not groomed paths. You get loose rock, deep sand washes, ledges, washboard that will rattle your teeth, and elevation changes that make low-power machines struggle. The 135-horsepower Rotax turbo engine means you are never underpowered on a climb, and the 20 inches of suspension travel keeps the cabin remarkably smooth over the rough stuff.

Just as important for a rental operation: every seat has a 3-point harness that keeps passengers locked in place. Not just the driver, all four seats. Every person in this machine is strapped in properly, which matters when you are bouncing through rock gardens and sand washes at speed.

Who Rents a UTV (and Who It Might Not Be Right For)

I see four main groups come through for UTV rentals:

Families with kids. We've had families with kids in carseats all the way through young adults, a day on the trails is one of the most fun things you can do together in Arizona that does not involve water. The rear seats put passengers right in the action, and the suspension makes it comfortable enough that younger riders are not getting beaten up.

Groups of friends. Bachelor parties, birthday trips, out-of-town visitors who want to do something different. Four people fit in one machine, and a day in Bulldog Canyon or out on the Apache Trail is a genuine experience, not a manufactured tourist attraction.

First-timers who are curious. You do not need any off-road experience. I walk every group through the machine before they leave, cover the controls, explain how to handle different terrain, and send them out with GPS trail maps on an iPad. Most first-timers come back grinning and asking how to book again.

Experienced riders who want a capable machine. If you ride your own UTV at home but do not want to ship it across the country, or if you want to try the X3 before buying one, this is a chance to spend a full day in a current-model turbo machine on genuinely challenging Arizona trails.

Sightseers and scenic cruisers. You do not need to be an adrenaline junkie to enjoy this. A good portion of our rentals go to older couples and retirees who want to see the Apache Trail and Bulldog Canyon scenery at their own pace. The 20 inches of suspension travel actually makes the X3 more comfortable on rough forest roads than most cars and SUVs, and the 3-point harnesses keep everyone secure without having to brace themselves. You control the speed. If you want to cruise at 15 mph and stop for photos every half mile, that is a perfectly good way to spend the day.

The contrast between raw desert terrain and a 135-horsepower turbocharged machine is something you do not forget.

How It Works: Pick Up and Ride

Most of our riders pick up the X3 right here at our shop on 724 E Scenic St in Apache Junction and drive straight to the trails. Bulldog Canyon is five minutes from our front door. You do the safety briefing, gear up, and you are on dirt in less than half an hour from the time you arrive.

Ride from Our Location

This is the simplest option and the way most people do it. You pick up at our shop, we walk you through the machine and the trail maps, and you drive the X3 directly to Bulldog Canyon or Apache Trail, along with other nearby trail access points. No trailer, no towing, no extra cost. When you are done riding, you drive it back. That is it.

Add a Trailer (Starting at $80/day)

If you want to hit a trail that is farther out, like the Box Canyon or Four Peaks, or if you are doing a multi-day rental and want to take the machine back to your campsite, you can rent one of our trailers starting at $80/day. You will need a tow vehicle with a 2-inch hitch receiver and a minimum 5,000-lb tow rating. Most full-size trucks and larger SUVs (Tahoe, 4Runner, Expedition) handle it fine. If you are not sure about your vehicle, call us at (480) 637-4848 and we will help you figure it out before you book.

Trailhead Delivery ($149)

Do not have a tow vehicle, or just prefer to skip the logistics? We will deliver the X3 to any trailhead within 45 minutes of our shop for $149. The machine will be waiting when you arrive, ready to go. This is popular with visitors flying into Phoenix who do not have a truck, and with groups who want to start riding the moment they get there.

Steve's recommendation: If it is your first time, just pick up at the shop and drive to Bulldog Canyon. It is five minutes away, the trails are excellent, and you do not have to deal with any extra logistics. Save the trailer option for when you want to explore the longer routes out toward Apache Trail or Four Peaks, or if you are doing an overnight and want the machine at your campsite.

Where to Ride: Arizona's Best UTV Trails

Apache Junction sits at the gateway to some of the best off-road riding in Arizona. Here are the areas I send people to most often.

Bulldog Canyon

Bulldog Canyon is the closest riding area to our location and the most popular destination for our UTV rentals. It is a designated recreation area within the Tonto National Forest with a network of trails ranging from flat, easy dirt roads to moderately technical rocky sections. A permit is required (we send you instructions when you book and help you get the gate code). It is a great fit for first-timers and families because you can choose your difficulty level, and you are never more than a few miles from the trailhead.

Apache Trail and Surrounding Area

The Apache Trail is an out-and-back route that takes you past Canyon Lake, through Tortilla Flat, and up close to Apache Lake. The scenery shifts from beautiful plateau views to dropping down into the canyon, and the road itself is part of the experience. This is a longer ride with more elevation change and stretches where you will not see another vehicle for miles. I recommend it for riders who have at least a few hours of seat time or who finished a morning loop in Bulldog Canyon and want something bigger in the afternoon.

Four Peaks Area

For advanced riders who want mountain terrain and higher elevation, Four Peaks offers some of the most challenging and rewarding riding in the region. Expect steep grades, loose rock, and trail conditions that change with the weather. The views from up there are worth it. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Phoenix metro. But this is not a beginner route. I will be honest with you during the briefing about whether it is a good fit for your group.

Tonto National Forest (Broader Network)

The Tonto National Forest covers nearly three million acres and has hundreds of miles of forest roads and trails. Beyond Bulldog Canyon and the Apache Trail, there are routes through the Goldfield Mountains and along the base of the Superstition Wilderness. I preload the best routes on the iPad maps, but if you are an experienced rider and want to explore, this is an enormous playground.

What a Typical Day Looks Like

Morning start. We strongly recommend an early start, especially from March through October. I open at 7 AM specifically because the desert is a different place at 7:30 in the morning versus noon. Cooler air, golden light, and you will have the trails mostly to yourself for the first couple of hours.

The briefing. Whether you pick up at our Apache Junction location or meet us at the trailhead, the day starts with a 15-to-20-minute walkthrough. We cover the throttle, brakes, four-wheel-drive modes, how to read the terrain, and where to go (and not go) based on your experience level. The iPad goes over the dash mount so you have GPS maps for the full ride.

On the trails. Most people spend four to six hours riding, depending on the route and how many stops they make. Bulldog Canyon has loops that range from easy dirt roads to rocky technical sections. The Apache Trail area has longer routes with more elevation change and some genuinely remote stretches. We will match the trail recommendation to your comfort level during the briefing.

Lunch break. Pack a cooler. There is storage behind the rear seats, and a shaded wash or overlook is a much better lunch spot than any restaurant. I tell everyone to bring more water than they think they need. A gallon per person minimum if you are going out during warmer months.

Return. Bring the machine back by the agreed time. Top off the fuel tank if it is not already full, and you are done.

UTV Rental Pricing

UTV rentals start at $349 for 4 hours, $449 for 8 hours, and $599 for 24 hours. Four-hour rentals have an 8 AM or 2 PM start time. Trailer add-on starts at $80/day if you want to tow to a different trail. Trailhead delivery is $149. All rentals include the complete equipment and gear package listed above. There are no hidden add-on fees for helmets, fuel, or maps.

For full pricing details including multi-day discounts, weekend vs. weekday rates, and current availability, visit our pricing page or call (480) 637-4848.

What I Tell People Before They Book

I would rather you know what to expect up front than have a bad day because something caught you off guard. Here is what I make sure every customer understands before they commit.

Towing requires a real tow vehicle. If you add a trailer rental, the X3 on its trailer weighs around 3,200 lbs. You need a 2-inch hitch receiver and a vehicle rated for at least 3,500 lbs of towing. A Camry cannot do it. An RAV4 cannot do it. If you are not sure, call us and we will figure it out. Most riders do not need a trailer at all since Bulldog Canyon is a five-minute drive from our shop, but if you want one, make sure your vehicle can handle it.

Summer heat is serious. From June through September, trail-level temperatures routinely exceed 110 degrees. The X3 has no air conditioning (no UTV does). If you book during peak summer, plan to ride at first light and be off the trail by noon. We open at 7 AM specifically to accommodate early starts. Bring significantly more water than you think you need.

The Bulldog Canyon permit takes planning. You cannot just show up at the gate. The permit must be obtained in advance through the Tonto National Forest, and you need a gate code to enter. We send you detailed instructions as soon as you book and follow up to make sure you have the code before your rental day.

Dust and dirt are part of the deal. You are driving a UTV through the Sonoran Desert. You will come back covered in fine desert dust. Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty, bring a bandana or neck gaiter for dusty sections, and be prepared to rinse off when you get back to your car.

Cell service is limited. Large portions of the Bulldog Canyon and Apache Trail areas have no cell service. The iPad GPS maps work offline, so you will always know where you are, but you will not be able to stream music, check email, or make phone calls in the canyons. Some people love the disconnect. Others find it unsettling. Either way, know it going in.

This is real off-road terrain. Even the "easy" trails have rough patches, loose rock, and sand washes. If you have back or neck problems that are aggravated by bumps and vibration, please talk to us before booking. I would rather point you toward a different rental (our wakeboat or pontoon time on the lake is much smoother) than put someone in a situation that is not right for them.

Steve's recommendation: If you have never ridden a UTV before, start with Bulldog Canyon. It has something for every skill level, the trails are well-mapped, you are close to the trailhead if you need to cut the day short, and the scenery is spectacular. Save the Apache Trail and Four Peaks for your second trip. And there is almost always a second trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about renting a UTV from Wave and Ridge.

01
Bulldog Canyon is a designated recreation area within the Tonto National Forest, and a permit is required. You can get one through the Tonto National Forest website. We send detailed instructions when you book and help you secure the gate code before your rental date. Most people get the permit and code sorted within a day or two, so do not leave it to the morning of your ride.
02
Most riders pick up at our shop (724 E Scenic St, Apache Junction) and drive the X3 straight to Bulldog Canyon, which is five minutes away. No trailer needed. If you want to ride a trail that is farther out, or if you are doing a multi-day rental, you can add a trailer starting at $80/day (requires a tow vehicle with a 2-inch hitch and 3,500-lb tow rating). We also offer trailhead delivery for $149 to any location within 45 minutes of our shop, which is ideal if you do not have a truck or just want the UTV waiting for you when you arrive.
03
The Can-Am Maverick X3 is a 4-seat side-by-side. Every seat has a full harness (not just a lap belt), and we provide DOT helmets and goggles for all four passengers. There is also storage space behind the rear seats for a cooler, water, and day-trip gear. If your group has more than four people, call us at (480) 637-4848 to discuss options.
04
No prior experience is required. Every rental begins with a thorough safety briefing and hands-on operation tutorial. We cover the throttle, brakes, steering, four-wheel-drive modes, and how to handle different terrain types. We also provide an iPad preloaded with GPS trail maps so you always know where you are. First-timers are one of our biggest customer groups, and Bulldog Canyon has plenty of beginner-friendly trails.
05
Every rental includes the 2025 Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo DS, DOT-certified helmets and goggles for up to 4 passengers, a full tank of fuel, an iPad loaded with GPS trail maps, all required safety equipment, and a comprehensive pre-ride briefing on vehicle operation and trail recommendations. There are no hidden fees for helmets, fuel surcharges, or map access. It is all in the daily rate.
06
A trailer is only needed if you want to ride trails beyond Bulldog Canyon or for multi-day rentals (most riders just pick up and drive straight to Bulldog Canyon, five minutes from our shop). If you do add a trailer, you need a vehicle with a 2-inch hitch receiver and a minimum tow rating of 3,500 lbs. Most full-size trucks, larger SUVs (Tahoe, 4Runner, Expedition), and many mid-size trucks handle it fine. Sedans, crossovers, and smaller SUVs generally do not have the tow rating. If you are unsure, call us at (480) 637-4848 and we will help you figure it out before you book.
07
The Arizona desert gets extremely hot from June through September, with trail-level temperatures regularly exceeding 110 degrees. The best months for UTV riding are October through April when daytime highs range from the 60s to low 90s. If you book during summer, plan to start at first light. We open at 7 AM for exactly this reason. Bring significantly more water than you think you need, and plan to be off the trail by midday during peak heat months.
08
Our Can-Am Maverick X3 is street-legal and registered in Arizona, so you can ride on roads where OHVs are permitted. However, most of the best riding is on the actual trails and forest roads, not pavement. Arizona law requires all UTV occupants to wear helmets on public roads, which is why we include DOT-certified helmets with every rental.
09
Call us immediately at (480) 637-4848. We maintain our fleet meticulously (these are 2025 model-year machines), but the desert is unpredictable. We carry mechanical breakdown coverage and will coordinate recovery. The iPad GPS maps make it easy to communicate your exact location. This is one reason we strongly recommend staying on mapped trails.
