Bulldog Canyon in 30 seconds
Bulldog Canyon is a Tonto National Forest OHV permit zone in the Mesa Ranger District, on the north side of Apache Junction between the Goldfield Mountains and the Usery area. To drive a UTV, ATV, dirt bike or 4x4 inside it, at least one person in each vehicle needs a Tonto National Forest OHV Permit, bought on Recreation.gov in their own name. There are no gate codes anymore. Welcome to Bulldog Canyon
Located less than an hour from Phoenix in the Mesa Ranger District of the Tonto National Forest, Bulldog Canyon is one of Arizona's premier OHV recreation areas. Spanning 34,000 acres with approximately 20-25 miles of designated routes, this stunning landscape offers breathtaking views of the Goldfield Mountains, Superstition Mountains, and the Sonoran Desert.
The area is steeped in history and legend, most notably the tale of the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine — one of the most famous lost treasure stories in American history. Tonto National Forest OHV Permit Required
Older trail reports talk about a Bulldog Canyon permit that came with a gate combination. That system is gone. The Forest Service now uses one Tonto NF OHV Permit for all of its OHV permit zones, including Bulldog Canyon, The Rolls, St. Clair and Desert Vista. Buy it on Recreation.gov only - the district office no longer sells Bulldog permits. It is issued to a rider by the name on their driver's license, so buy it in the name of someone riding in the vehicle. You need one permit-holder per motorized vehicle; riders under 16 do not need their own but must be with a guardian who holds one. The permit is not part of any Wave and Ridge UTV rental, so buy yours on Recreation.gov before you ride.

The five access points

The gates at Blue Point and Usery stay in place to keep wild horses off the highway, which is why the Forest Service asks every rider to close them. Parking at a staging area does not need a permit. Driving past the staging area into the permit zone does.
Riding Bulldog Canyon in a Wave and Ridge UTV
Bulldog Canyon is the most common first ride for our UTV renters. Here is how the day works:
- Book on our booking page and buy your Tonto NF OHV Permit on Recreation.gov.
- Pick up at 724 E Scenic St, Apache Junction. Every driver brings a valid driver's license, and renters and drivers must be 25 or older.
- Get the walkthrough. Helmets and goggles for four, iPad trail maps that work offline, and a run-through of the machine and the routes.
- Drive to the trail. The X3 is street-legal, so most riders head straight from our lot.
- Bring it back full at your scheduled return time.
Pick the length that fits your plan: a half day is 4 hours (starts at 8 AM or 2 PM), a full day is 6 hours, and an 8-hour Extended Day gives you Bulldog in the morning and time for the Apache Trail area after lunch. We are open Monday through Saturday. Compare options on the UTV rentals page.
Before you go
- Check the Tonto National Forest alerts page the morning of your ride for fire restrictions or closures.
- Carry at least a gallon of water per person in warm months.
- Stay on designated routes. Off-route driving is prohibited.
- Close the Blue Point and Usery gates behind you, and give horses room.
- Cell service is patchy. Download your maps before you leave.

Do I need a permit for Bulldog Canyon?
Yes. Motorized use requires a Tonto National Forest OHV Permit from Recreation.gov, held by at least one rider in each vehicle.
Is there a gate code for Bulldog Canyon?
No. Gate combinations ended with the old permit system. Blue Point and Usery have unlocked gates you close behind you.
Is the permit included with a Wave and Ridge UTV rental?
No. Buy it on Recreation.gov before your ride.
Can beginners ride Bulldog Canyon?
Yes. Routes run from easy dirt roads to rocky sections, and every rental starts with a walkthrough and preloaded trail maps.

The Legend of the Lost Dutchman Mine
The Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine is perhaps the most famous lost treasure story in American history.
