The Legend of the Lost Dutchman Mine

The Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine is perhaps the most famous lost treasure story in American history.

German immigrant Jacob Waltz allegedly discovered a fabulously rich gold mine in the Superstition Mountains during the 1870s-1880s. He would periodically emerge from the wilderness with saddlebags full of high-grade gold ore, yet he kept the mine's location a closely guarded secret.

When Waltz died in Phoenix in 1891, he reportedly described the mine's location to his neighbor. Despite countless searches since, the mine has never been found. Explore the legendary terrain yourself with a Wave & Ridge UTV rental β€” we'll deliver right to the trailhead so you can focus on the adventure.
