Does a 4-Hour Rental Start at Pickup, or When You Hit the Water?
Three different people asked us this in a month. Here is the flat answer, plus the arithmetic nobody puts on a pricing page.
It is the most-asked question on our phone line, and until today it was not answered anywhere on this site. People are not being difficult when they ask it - they are trying to work out what they are actually buying before they put money down. So here it is, without the preamble.
Does a 4-hour rental include travel time?
Yes. Your rental block runs from the start time on your booking confirmation to the return time on your booking confirmation. It is not on-water time. The drive to the lake, the launch, the retrieve, and the drive back all happen inside your block.
That is not a Wave & Ridge quirk - it is what the rental agreement you sign says. The rental period is the period specified in your booking confirmation, and the equipment has to be back by the date and time in that same confirmation. There is no separate on-water clock running anywhere.
The one-sentence version: you are buying a window of possession, measured from our lot and back to our lot - not hours of engine time.
What the clock does not include: the hour before
Here is the part that surprises people in the good direction. We ask every renter to arrive one hour before their rental start time at 724 E Scenic St in Apache Junction. That hour is for hitching up and loading, fitting life jackets, the walk-through on your specific machine, and the safety briefing.
None of it comes out of your block. If you book a 9:00 AM start, you arrive at 8:00 AM, and your four hours still begin at 9:00. The prep is on us, timewise.
The flip side matters just as much: the return time does not move. If you show up at 9:00 for a 9:00 start, the hookup and briefing come out of your own four hours - not out of ours. Arriving early is the single cheapest thing you can do to protect your day, and it costs nothing.
We open at 7:00 AM, Monday through Saturday. A 7:00 AM start is allowed - you arrive at 6:00 and someone meets you.
What a 4-hour block actually looks like at Canyon Lake
Canyon Lake Marina is about 26 minutes and 14.7 miles from our lot. Saguaro Lake Marina is about 30 minutes and 20.6 miles. Those two numbers are the whole ballgame, because they are the only part of the day you cannot compress.
Here is a 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM block at Canyon, laid out honestly. The launch and retrieve figures are planning allowances, not promises - your ramp queue on a Saturday in July is not our ramp queue on a Tuesday in November.
| Clock | What is happening | On your block? |
|---|---|---|
| 8:00 AM | Arrive at 724 E Scenic St. Hitch up, load, life jackets, walk-through, safety briefing. | No |
| 9:00 AM | Block starts. You pull out of the lot. | Block begins |
| 9:26 AM | Arrive at Canyon Lake. | Yes |
| ~9:50 AM | Parked, unloaded, launched, tow rig parked. Allow 20-30 minutes. | Yes |
| 9:50 AM - 12:10 PM | On the water. | Yes |
| ~12:34 PM | Retrieved, strapped down, secured. Allow another 20-30 minutes. | Yes |
| 1:00 PM | Back at the lot. Block ends. | Block ends |
Times are illustrative. The 26-minute drive is measured from our lot, not from Phoenix - if you see a 45 or 50 minute figure quoted anywhere, that is from central Phoenix and it is a different starting point.
The same arithmetic for every block
Subtract the round trip from the block and you get your time at the lake. Subtract the ramp on both ends - call it 40 to 60 minutes total - and you get your time on the water.
| Block | Lake | Round trip | At the lake | Realistic on-water |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 hours | Canyon | 52 min | 1 hr 08 min | 8 min - 28 min |
| 2 hours | Saguaro | 60 min | 1 hr 00 min | 0 - 20 min |
| 4 hours | Canyon | 52 min | 3 hr 08 min | 2 hr 08 - 2 hr 28 |
| 4 hours | Saguaro | 60 min | 3 hr 00 min | 2 hr 00 - 2 hr 20 |
| 8 hours | Canyon | 52 min | 7 hr 08 min | 6 hr 08 - 6 hr 28 |
| 8 hours | Saguaro | 60 min | 7 hr 00 min | 6 hr 00 - 6 hr 20 |
Round trip uses the verified drive times from our lot: Canyon 26 minutes each way, Saguaro 30 minutes each way. The on-water column subtracts a 40 to 60 minute allowance for launching and retrieving.
You are buying a window of possession, not hours of engine time. Once you know that, picking a block gets easy.
The whole answer, in one lineThe 2-hour block is a price, not a plan
Our jet ski entry price is $199 for two hours, and nobody in the Valley beats it. But look at the top two rows of that table before you book it. Two hours minus a 52-minute round trip minus the ramp on both ends leaves you well under half an hour on the water at Canyon, and effectively nothing at Saguaro.
It is a real option if you are a repeat renter who can launch fast, or if you want a short blast rather than a lake day. For most first-timers it is not the block you want.
The four-hour block is $219. That is twenty dollars more for double the window - the single best value decision on our whole rate card, and the one people most often get wrong on the way in. The full day is $319.
The $20 U-Haul comp applies on 4-hour and 8-hour rentals only, not on the 2-hour block. That is another $20 of daylight between the two shortest options. (Mileage is not covered.)
The UTV is the exception, and it is a big one
Everything above assumes you are towing to a lake. If you rent the Can-Am Maverick X3, you are not. Bulldog Canyon is five minutes from our front door - you pick the machine up, drive it straight to the trail, and drive it back. No trailer, no ramp, no launch.
That means a 4-hour UTV block is very close to four hours of actual riding, which is why the UTV block at $349 for four hours behaves completely differently from a 4-hour jet ski block at the same nominal length. If your only worry is losing time to logistics, the trail is the answer to that worry.
Five ways to buy back time inside your block
None of these cost anything
Every one of them is time you would otherwise hand to the parking lot.
- Arrive the full hour early. It is the only free time in the day, and skipping it converts directly into lost water time.
- Load the cooler, the towels and the sunscreen at home. Not in our lot, and not in the ramp queue.
- Go on a weekday. The ramp moves faster, and the MIDWEEK code takes 10% off Monday through Thursday rentals anyway.
- Take the earliest start you can stand. A 7:00 AM block gets you a quiet ramp, cooler air, and calmer water - the ramp allowance in that table shrinks noticeably.
- Decide who is driving the tow vehicle before you leave. Sorting that out at the ramp with a boat behind you is how twenty minutes disappears.
Late, early, and what the agreement actually says
If you are running late coming back
There is a 1-hour grace period after your scheduled return time, fleet-wide. After the grace period, the late fee in the agreement you signed applies: $150 per hour on a jet ski, $300 per hour on a boat. Call (480) 637-4848 if you can see it coming - we would much rather know.
If you are running late getting there
Your return time does not shift, so a late arrival comes out of your own block rather than ours. Call (480) 637-4848 if you are running behind - we can only hold equipment so long, and a no-call no-show can cost you the booking outright. One phone call is cheaper than either outcome.
If you come back early
The agreement is explicit that an early return does not earn a refund unless we have agreed to it in writing. Another reason to run the arithmetic before you pick the block rather than after.
If the forecast turns
Our Weather Protection policy is a reschedule, not a refund. If a storm is forecast for your day, contact us before you launch and we will move you at no charge, subject to availability. Once a rental has launched we cannot recall it - the on-water call is yours to make. Cancellation terms are in your booking agreement.
So which block should you book?
| You want | Book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A quick blast, and you have launched before | Jet ski, 2 hours - $199 | Cheapest way onto a Sea-Doo. Tight for a lake day. |
| A proper half day on the water | Jet ski, 4 hours - $219 | $20 more, double the window, and the U-Haul comp applies. |
| A full lake day without watching the clock | Jet ski, 8 hours - $319 | About 6 hours on the water after the drive and the ramp. |
| Surf and wake behind a real hull | Wakeboat, 4 hr $999 / 8 hr $1,499 | Up to 16 passengers. The 8-hour block is where this one makes sense. |
| Maximum ride time per dollar | UTV, 4 hr $349 / 6 hr $449 / 8 hr $549 | Five minutes to the trailhead. Almost no logistics tax. |
Base rates. Holiday weekends carry a +20% surcharge. MIDWEEK takes 10% off Monday through Thursday. Refundable deposits are taken at pickup and returned the same day: $500 per jet ski, $1,500 wakeboat, $1,500 UTV. Jet skis are 21+ to rent and 16+ to operate; boats and UTVs are 25+ to rent. Cancellation terms are shown at checkout before you pay. Gas is not part of the rate - every rental goes out with a full tank and comes back full, or you pay the cost of the gas plus a $20 refueling fee.
The full ladder for every machine lives on the pricing page, and every rate there is a pickup-to-return block measured exactly the way this article describes.
Questions people actually ask us
Does a 4-hour rental include travel time?
Yes. Your rental block runs from the start time on your booking confirmation to the return time on your booking confirmation, so the drive to the lake, the launch, the retrieve, and the drive back all happen inside it. It is not on-water time. Canyon Lake is about 26 minutes from our shop and Saguaro Lake about 30 minutes, so a 4-hour block gives you roughly three hours at the lake before you subtract the ramp.
Does the rental clock start when I arrive at the shop or when I leave with the trailer?
Neither, exactly - it starts at the scheduled start time printed on your booking confirmation. We ask you to arrive an hour before that time so the hookup, the life jacket fitting, the walk-through, and the safety briefing all happen before your block begins. That prep hour does not come out of your rental.
How much time do I actually get on the water with a 4-hour jet ski rental?
At Canyon Lake, a 4-hour block leaves 3 hours and 8 minutes at the lake after the 52-minute round trip. Most people spend 20 to 30 minutes launching and the same again retrieving, which puts you at roughly 2 to 2.5 hours on the water. At Saguaro Lake it is about 15 minutes less.
Does the safety briefing come out of my rental time?
No. The briefing, the hookup, the loading, and the paperwork happen during the hour before your block starts. Arrive an hour early at 724 E Scenic St in Apache Junction and your clock still starts at your booked time. Arrive late and you lose that time from your own block, because the return time does not move.
What happens if I bring it back late?
There is a 1-hour grace period after your scheduled return time across the whole fleet. After that grace period, the late fee in the rental agreement you signed applies - $150 per hour on a jet ski and $300 per hour on a boat. If you can see you are going to run over, call us at (480) 637-4848 rather than guessing.
Can I add an extra hour if I am running behind?
Not on the motorized fleet - the return time on your confirmation is the return time, so book the longer block up front if you think you will want it. On a jet ski, moving from the 2-hour block to the 4-hour block is $20 and doubles your window. Paddleboards are the one exception: an extra hour is $20 and has to be arranged in advance, not added at the counter.
Do I get money back if I return early?
No. The rental agreement is explicit that an early return does not earn a refund unless we have agreed to one in writing. You are buying the block, not the hours you happen to use, which is the other reason it is worth doing the arithmetic before you pick a duration.
Who pays for the gas?
You do. Every rental leaves our lot with a full tank and comes back full, or you pay the cost of the gas plus a $20 refueling fee. Monday-Thursday jet ski and UTV rentals get Weekday Gas on Us: bring it back at any fuel level and we skip the fuel charge. Everything else - the water toys, the tubes, the tow ropes, the Bluetooth speaker, the life jackets - is part of the rate with no add-on charges.
Now you know what four hours buys
Pick the block that matches the day you actually want. Every rate is pickup-to-return, all your gear is included, and the deposit comes back the same day.
