UTV Rental for a Group Near Scottsdale: How to Plan a Bulldog Canyon Group Ride

For a group off-road day near Scottsdale, rent Can-Am Maverick X3 UTVs from Wave and Ridge in Apache Junction and drive them straight to Bulldog Canyon, about five minutes from the shop. Each machine seats four with a full harness on every seat and comes with DOT helmets, goggles, the Bulldog Canyon permit, and iPad trail maps. It is a self-drive ride with no trailer and no guide, and each renter must be 25 or older.

A group ride takes a little more planning than a solo rental. You are sorting machines, drivers, gear, and timing for a whole crew. Here is how to plan it step by step, whether it is a birthday, a bachelorette weekend, or a group of friends who want a real desert day.

Step 1: Count heads and divide by four

Every X3 seats four people, so start with your headcount and divide. Six people means two machines. Eight people fits two machines exactly. Ten means three. Keep a seat or two open if you can, because it makes swapping drivers and passengers easier at the regroup stops.

How many machines are open depends on your date, so for any group bigger than four, text us your headcount before you book and we will tell you what is available.

Step 2: Pick your renters and drivers

The person renting each machine must be 25 or older and bring a valid driver's license or ID. Whether one renter can sign for several machines, and the minimum ages for drivers and passengers, are worth confirming for your specific group, so ask us when you book. It is much easier to sort that out ahead of time than at the counter on ride day.

When you pick drivers, choose the people who will drive steadily, not the ones who talk the biggest game. Nobody needs prior off-road experience, but a calm driver makes the day better for the three people strapped in next to them.

Step 3: Pick the season and start time

October through May is the best time for a desert group ride. In warmer months, start early and plan to be off the trail before the worst of the heat. The shop opens at 7 AM, and an early slot gives the group cooler air and quieter trails. The fall morning checklist is a good read if you are riding this season.

Step 4: Book online and lock the date

Reserve each machine through Booking Central. The Bulldog Canyon permit is included with the rental. The shop is open Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday, so plan weekend rides for Saturday. If storms are in the forecast for your date, contact us before you head out and we will reschedule at no charge.

Step 5: Pack for the whole group

Helmets, goggles, the permit, and the trail maps come with the machine, so you do not need to bring your own.

Step 6: Arrive, gear up, and do the walkthrough

Pickup is only at the shop at 724 E Scenic St in Apache Junction. We do not meet groups at the trailhead. Everyone gets fitted for helmets and goggles, the iPad maps go on the dash, and we run a 15 to 20 minute walkthrough of the controls and the trails. Have every driver listen in, not just the organizer. Then you drive the street-legal X3s from the lot to Bulldog Canyon. Our street-legal UTV explainer covers that drive.

Step 7: Ride as a convoy

Riding with several machines is its own skill. A few habits keep a group together:

  1. Name a lead and a sweep. Put your most confident driver in front and a steady one at the back so nobody gets left behind.
  2. Leave space for dust. Give the machine ahead enough room that you can see the trail, not just its dust cloud.
  3. Agree on regroup points. Pick stops on the iPad map before you roll, and wait there until every machine arrives.
  4. Rotate drivers at stops. Swap seats at regroup points so more people get time behind the wheel, as long as each driver meets the rules for your rental.
  5. Stay on mapped trails. The iPad maps show the routes. Stick to them.

For route ideas, see the Bulldog Canyon guide, the Bulldog Canyon destination page, and our UTV trails near Phoenix post.

Step 8: Bring the machines back

Drive back to the shop by your return time. The machines go out with a full tank and come back full, and fuel is not included. The Apache Junction UTV day plan walks through a full day from pickup to return.

The bachelorette or birthday version

A group UTV ride works well as the daytime half of a Scottsdale weekend. Book a morning slot, ride Bulldog Canyon while it is cool, and be back in town for brunch or the pool by the afternoon. If part of the group would rather be on the water, pair the ride with a boat day on another date. The bachelorette party rentals page covers the lake side. If drinks are part of the plan, ask us about the rules for the trail when you book, and save the celebrating for after the machines are back.
