Arizona Jet Ski Guide

Saguaro Lake vs. Bartlett Lake for Jet Skiing Near Phoenix

Two of the best jet ski lakes in the Valley, side by side — how they compare on open water, scenery, crowds, drive time, and cost, and which one gets you on the water fastest.

If you are choosing between Saguaro Lake and Bartlett Lake for jet skiing near Phoenix, the honest answer is that both are terrific and they win on different things. Bartlett is the bigger, more open lake with room to run wide open. Saguaro is the more scenic, more convenient one, tucked into desert canyon walls and just about 30 minutes from our Apache Junction shop. Below we break down both so you can pick the right day on the water.

The short version: Choose Bartlett for maximum open water and fewer boats. Choose Saguaro for dramatic scenery, a full-service marina, and the shortest tow from the East Valley. Wave & Ridge rents for Saguaro (and Canyon), so it is the easy pick if you want to grab a ski and go — pick up in Apache Junction and you are about 30 minutes from the water.

The scenic one

Saguaro Lake for Jet Skiing

Saguaro Lake is the second reservoir on the Salt River chain, about 40 miles east of downtown Phoenix and roughly a 45-minute drive. It runs about 10 miles long with more than 22 miles of shoreline, and it is framed by steep Sonoran canyon walls where you will often spot bighorn sheep on the cliffs. It is one of the most photogenic lakes in the state.

The lake is anchored by the full-service Saguaro Lake Marina, with a paved launch, fuel dock, store, restaurant, and restrooms. The upper and lower sections connect through a narrow channel where boaters slow to a posted 15 mph, so keep that in mind if you like to move. Because it is close and scenic, Saguaro gets busy on summer weekends, which is the trade-off for its convenience.

Golden hour on Saguaro Lake — canyon walls, calm water, and a full-service marina about 30 minutes from our Apache Junction shop.

From our Apache Junction shop it is about 30 minutes to the Saguaro Lake Marina — the shortest tow of any Phoenix-area rental shop.

The big open one

Bartlett Lake for Jet Skiing

Bartlett Lake sits on the Verde River on the north end of the Valley, near Cave Creek and Carefree. It is the big one: about 2,815 boatable acres when full, roughly 12 miles long, and deep, which adds up to more open water than Canyon and Saguaro combined. That means room to open up the throttle and, on a typical Saturday morning, fewer boats crowding your line.

Bartlett is served by its own marina for launching and fuel, and its wide, high-desert basin has a big-sky, more remote feel than the canyon-hemmed Salt River lakes. The catch is distance. Bartlett is about 48 miles from downtown Phoenix, and from the East Valley or Apache Junction it is a notably longer haul, well over an hour of towing each way, versus about 30 minutes to Saguaro.

Bartlett Lake — the Valley's biggest boatable water, wide open and less crowded, but a longer tow from the East Valley.

Where to ride

Which Lakes Wave & Ridge Rents For

Wave & Ridge rents for Saguaro Lake and Canyon Lake, the two closest lakes to our Apache Junction shop. You pick up your ski at the shop and tow it to the lake — and because we are the closest rental shop to both, that tow is short, which means an earlier start and more time on the water instead of on the freeway.

Bartlett is a fantastic lake, but we do not rent for it yet, so if Bartlett's wide-open water is calling, you would bring your own craft or use a Bartlett-based operator. For most East Valley riders, Saguaro offers the best mix of scenery, facilities, and a quick drive.

💡 Insider tip: Plan to arrive about an hour before your start time for hookup, life-jacket fitting, and your safety briefing. Book a Monday-through-Thursday ride and code MIDWEEK takes 10% off — the water is quieter midweek, too.
