Group Activities Near Phoenix and Mesa: 8 Outdoor Ideas for Birthdays, Team Building, and Big Friend Groups

For a big group near Phoenix or Mesa, the easiest outdoor day starts in Apache Junction. Wave and Ridge rents a 16-seat wakeboat and 2-to-3-rider jet skis for Saguaro Lake, plus 4-seat Can-Am UTVs that drive straight to Bulldog Canyon, about five minutes from the shop. It works for team outings, milestone birthdays, and friend groups: one pickup spot, safety gear included, and quieter weekdays on the lake.

Here are eight group ideas that work whether you are planning a 40th birthday out of Mesa, a team day for a Phoenix office, or a weekend with a big group of friends. After the list, you will find how to split a large group across machines and a quick planning checklist.

1. A private lake day for the whole group

A Centurion RI 245 wakeboat holds up to 16 passengers, so a big friend group rides together instead of splitting into cars and tables. Wakesurf boards, wakeboards, tubes, and tower speakers are included. Surf in the calm morning water, anchor in a cove at midday, and tube in the afternoon. The group tows the boat about 30 to 35 minutes from the shop to Saguaro Lake. See wakeboat rentals.

2. The milestone birthday on the water (Mesa and the East Valley)

Turning 30, 40, or 50 deserves more than a dinner reservation. A boat day is an easy adult birthday idea near Mesa, and a few tips from our birthday parties page make it easier:

3. Team building: the Lake Day

For an outdoor team building activity near Phoenix, put the team on one boat for the day. Everyone signs a standard liability waiver, and we can send the documents ahead of time so your team can look them over. Weekdays are quieter on the lake, which is a real advantage for a company outing. The renter and boat drivers must be 25 or older, and the driver stays sober. The corporate events page covers how team days work.

4. Team building: the Desert Run

Not every team wants to get wet. Can-Am Maverick X3 UTVs seat four people each, with a full harness on every seat, DOT helmets and goggles, the Bulldog Canyon permit, and iPad trail maps. They are street-legal, so the team drives straight from our lot to Bulldog Canyon. October through May is the best season for a desert run. Start with UTV rentals and the Bulldog Canyon guide.

5. A jet ski rotation for a friend group

Sea-Doo Spark 3UP jet skis carry two to three riders each, up to 495 pounds combined. A few skis and a group willing to trade off can keep everyone busy all day. The renter must be 21 or older, and operators must be 16 or older. Life jackets and a safety orientation come with each ski. See jet ski rentals.

6. A Bulldog Canyon convoy

For a friend group that wants dirt instead of water, run several UTVs through Bulldog Canyon together. Name a lead and a sweep, agree on regroup points on the iPad map, and swap drivers at stops. Everyone gets a 15 to 20 minute walkthrough at the shop first. Bring at least a gallon of water per person in warm months, and wear closed-toe shoes.

7. A scenic drive on the Apache Trail

Some of the best group activities in Apache Junction do not need a rental at all. The Apache Trail (SR 88) remains open even with Canyon Lake closed, and Tortilla Flat is open for visitors. A drive out that way pairs well with a morning ride or a lake day. See the Apache Trail page for more, and our Apache Junction location page for where the shop sits.

8. A paddleboard morning

A stand-up paddleboard is an easy add-on for the people in your group who want a slower hour on the water. Each board comes with a paddle, a leash, and a life jacket. See paddleboard rentals.

How to split a big group

For 10 to 20 people, the simplest approach is to start with the boat for up to 16 and add jet skis or UTVs for the rest:

How many jet skis and UTVs are open depends on your date, so text us your headcount and we will tell you what is available. For how one organizer books for the group, see the group booking guide.

Planning checklist

  1. Headcount. Lock it early and plan machines around it.
  2. Tow vehicles. Watercraft are pickup only, and your group tows them. Ask us when you book about trailers for more than one unit.
  3. Ages. 25+ to rent the boat or a UTV, 21+ to rent a jet ski, 16+ to operate a jet ski. Minors need a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
  4. Waivers. Every participant signs one.
  5. Food and coolers. Coolers are welcome. No glass on the watercraft.
  6. Arrival. Plan to be at the shop about an hour before a water rental starts.
  7. Weather. If storms are forecast, contact us before launch and we will reschedule at no charge.
  8. Lake status. Canyon Lake has been closed since September 8, 2026 for the dam safety drawdown, so water days run on Saguaro Lake. See the Canyon Lake closure update. Last checked: Sep 28, 2026.
