Most “Wakeboats” for Rent Are Really Just Outboards with a Tow Rope

Outboard engines you can’t wakesurf behind

Exposed propeller makes wakesurfing dangerous and impossible. Outboards are not surf boats.

No ballast system — tiny, unstable wake

Without ballast, you get a choppy ripple, not a rideable wave. Good luck surfing that.

Water toys cost extra — nickel and dime

Add $50 for the tube, $75 for the board, $30 per life jacket. The bill doubles before you launch.

Seats 8, not 16 — half your crew stays on shore

Most rental boats max out at 8 passengers. Your group of 12 is out of luck.

Your Day on the Lake

What a Day on the Wakeboat Looks Like

Morning: Wakesurfing & Wakeboarding

Launch early and take advantage of glassy water before 10am. Canyon Lake is usually mirror-flat in the morning. The Ramfill ballast shapes a perfect wave.

Midday: Anchor in a Cove & Swim

Find a sheltered cove around 11am, drop anchor, and swim. Both Canyon Lake and Saguaro Lake have stunning coves with clear water. The swim platform makes it easy.

Afternoon: Tubing & Cruising

Switch to tubing when a little chop makes the ride more fun. Crank the tower speakers, take turns on the tube, and cruise the shoreline all afternoon.

Purpose-Built Surf Boat

What Makes This Boat Different

This is a purpose-built surf boat with an inboard direct-drive engine. It is not a pontoon with a tow rope.

Inboard Direct-Drive Engine

The propeller sits under the hull, not behind it. This is what makes wakesurfing safe: riders surf just feet behind the boat without propeller risk.

Ramfill Ballast System

The most customizable ballast in the industry. Shape the wake for beginners or experienced riders. Fills and drains on command from the dash.

Tower Speakers + Bluetooth

Connect your phone via Bluetooth and play your playlist all day. Integrated speaker system on the wakeboard tower carries sound across the water.

All Toys Included

Wakesurf boards, wakeboards with bindings, towable tubes, tow ropes, and USCG-approved life jackets for all 16 passengers.

When I started looking for a wakeboat to add to Wave and Ridge, I tested boats from four different manufacturers over two seasons. The Centurion RI 245 won because it throws a legitimate surf wave that experienced riders actually want to ride, and it is stable enough for a family of sixteen to spend eight hours on it.

The Centurion RI 245 is an inboard direct-drive, which is the only engine type that allows safe wakesurfing. The propeller sits under the hull, not behind it, so riders can surf just feet behind the boat. You cannot wakesurf behind an outboard. The boat seats 16, has the Ramfill adjustable ballast system, and comes with all the equipment you need for a full day.

Sixteen of your people, a sound system, and eight hours on the lake. Try finding a better group outing for $94 a head.

Who Rents the Wakeboat?

Here is something that surprises people: the majority of our wakeboat renters are not experienced wakeboarders. They are families, friend groups, and party crews who want a big, powerful, comfortable boat with everything included.

Families who want to tube and cruise. This is our most common customer. Parents want a boat big enough for the kids, the in-laws, and the coolers. The Centurion seats 16 comfortably, and because it is a heavy inboard boat, the ride is smooth even when Canyon Lake gets choppy in the afternoon. Kids love tubing behind this boat because the power is consistent and controllable.

Groups celebrating something. Birthday parties, bachelor and bachelorette groups, graduation celebrations, corporate outings. Sixteen seats, tower speakers, and a full day on the lake.

Wakesurfers and wakeboarders. If you are here specifically for wake sports, this is the boat. The Ramfill ballast system lets you dial in the wave shape. The inboard direct-drive is what makes wakesurfing possible.

Wakesurfing vs. Wakeboarding vs. Tubing

Wakesurfing: Ride a short surfboard on the rolling wave behind the boat at ~10-11 mph. Start with a rope; experienced surfers drop it and surf hands-free. Beginners welcome.

Wakeboarding: Stand on a board with bindings, ride the wake at 18-22 mph, use the wake as a ramp for jumps. Steeper learning curve. Boards in several sizes included.

Tubing: Sit on an inflatable tube towed behind the boat. No skill required. The crowd favorite for families. The driver controls how wild the ride gets. Tubes included.

Most groups mix all three over the course of the day. The transition takes about five minutes.

Insider Tip: For wakesurfing, the best wave shape comes when you have 8 to 12 people on board. The extra weight helps the Ramfill ballast system create a bigger, cleaner wave. Invite the whole crew.

What You Should Know Before You Book

Pricing starts at $999 for a half day. That is four water hours plus a one-hour grace period. Full day (8 water hours) is $1,499. Weekend rental (Friday through Sunday) is $4,250. All equipment included.

Fuel is additional. We send the boat out full; you bring it back full. Budget $150 to $250 for fuel on a full day depending on your activity mix.

Captain experience matters. Arizona does not require a boating license, but driving a 5,000-pound inboard boat is meaningfully different from driving a jet ski or an outboard. Consider adding a captain ($40/hr). A skilled driver also makes a huge difference in wave quality. For safety guidance, the U.S. Coast Guard Boating Safety site is a good resource.

Weather matters. Wind is the enemy of wakesurfing. Arizona mornings are usually calm, but afternoon wind is common. Monsoon season (July through September) can bring sudden storms. Check the Arizona Game and Fish boating page for current conditions.

By Steve Underwood, Founder of Wave and Ridge: I have been boating on Arizona’s lakes since I was 10 years old. That is 32 years on these waterways. The Centurion RI 245 is the real deal—a genuine surf boat with the power and technology to create a rideable wave that experienced surfers and first-timers both enjoy.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Arizona does not require a special boating license. However, the Centurion RI 245 is a large inboard boat that handles differently than an outboard or a pontoon. If you have boat driving experience, you will be fine after a quick orientation. If you have never driven a boat, we strongly recommend adding a captain ($40/hr) so you can focus on enjoying the water while someone experienced handles the driving and ballast settings.
Not at all. Most of our wakeboat renters spend the majority of their day tubing, swimming, and cruising. The Centurion is excellent for tubing because of its power and stability. If you want to try wakesurfing, no prior experience is required. The Ramfill ballast system creates a wave that beginners can ride with a rope, and more experienced surfers can eventually drop the rope.
The Centurion RI 245 is rated for up to 16 passengers. We include enough life jackets for a full boat. For wakesurfing specifically, the best wave shape comes when you have 8 to 12 people on board because the extra weight helps the ballast system create a bigger, cleaner wave.
Absolutely, and most groups do exactly that. A typical day looks like wakesurfing or wakeboarding in the morning when the water is calm, then switching to tubing and swimming in the afternoon. We include wakesurf boards, wakeboards, and tubes with every rental, so you can switch between activities whenever you want. The transition takes about five minutes.
Weekends from March through October book out weeks in advance. If you want a Saturday in peak season, two to four weeks ahead is a safe bet. Weekday availability is generally easier. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day) can book a month or more out.
Fuel is not included in the rental price. The Centurion has a large tank, and usage varies by activity. Wakesurfing burns more fuel because the engine runs at higher RPMs with the ballast engaged. A typical full day averages around $150 to $250 in fuel. We send you out with a full tank and you return it full.
Canyon Lake is my top recommendation. The canyon walls block wind in the morning, giving you the calmest water in the region. Saguaro Lake is also excellent. Both lakes have the depth the ballast system needs and both are within 35 minutes of our Apache Junction location.
Arizona weather is generally reliable, but monsoon season (July through September) can bring sudden afternoon storms. If conditions are unsafe, we work with you to reschedule. We never send anyone out in lightning or dangerously high winds. Check in with us the morning of your rental and we will give you an honest assessment.
Cancellations made 72 or more hours before your rental receive a full refund. Within 72 hours, we offer a full credit toward a future date. If weather forces a cancellation on our end, you always get a full refund or reschedule at no charge. The safest move is to book now and lock in your date.
